Stowe's hand and postmarked Hartford, Conn. Also laid in is an early 20th century description of this item by bookseller Harry F. Faint contemporaneous inscriptions on endpapers of both volumes. The two volumes reside in a custom slipcase.

The pages are clean, with NO marks or bookplates in the book. A sharp copy that includes acetate dustjackets to protect the books. To those engaged in fighting slavery it appeared as an indictment of all the evils inherent in the system they opposed; to the pro-slavery forces it was a slanderous attack on 'the Southern way of life. Very Good. A beautiful set.
As Cohn notes, because the wrappers were printed on paper of poor quality, copies in good condition are difficult to find. The only parts issue of the novel; "one of the scarcest forms of the story," and "excessively rare.

Jewett and Company, Antique book with wear to the red leather cover, gilt decoration. Pages are loose, tanned with age. This is a book in need of restoration, but worth it. An early copy of this classic. Writing to a gentleman whom you have never seen and with nothing particular to say is rather awkward, so you must excuse me if I am brief.

On the verso of the first endpaper are two newspaper clippings and laid in between is another newspaper clipping now in a sleeve. The clippings have caused some light offsetting to the letter which also has two horizontal creases from the original fold and a narrow, left edge, crease from being tipped in to close to the gutter. The L. Clark letter is in an envelope labeled "Autographed letter, signed of L.
It is written on both sides of a slip of paper which was originally torn in half. There is a horizontal crease near the top edge. The letter is lightly toned and has some areas of faint soiling. The volume is rubbed and abraded on the edges folds and joints. In addition to aforementioned clippings, there are two images of Harriet Beecher Stowe, one mounted to the front pastedown and the other to the fourth endpaper.
A typed short biographical summary of Harriet Beecher Stowe as well as the typed contents of the two letters is affixed to the front endpaper. The illustrations pages list 5 plates which are missing, lists another on an incorrect page and makes no mention of 4 other plates, multi colored, which appear at various points. We have searched for another Donohue volume to compare or replace the missing plates and have been unable to locate any other copy.
The volume has some tipped corners, a few stains, and a short fore-edge tear on one of the illustrations. A bookplate of William E. Ambler is affixed to the front pastedown. Overall, this is a good copy, with unusual attributes, and interesting associations. Images furnished upon request.

The first printing of this landmark book occurred on March 20, It was sold out in a matter of days. Per BAL by April 1, a second printing of ten thousand copies had been produced which was followed by a third printing of fifty thousand copies which sold out in only 8 weeks by mid-May of An extremely handsome, matched set of one of the most important books of the 19th century. Both volumes are illustrated with a frontispiece and three, wood engraved plates in each volume by Hammatt Billings.
Two volumes. First edition, first printing; Hobart and Robbins listed on both copyright pages, title pages lack printing statement as called for. Finely bound in blue morocco over blue marbled paper covered boards, top edges gilt. Very Good with rubbing to binding at extremities.
